About

Samsung Electronics, founded in January 1969 and listed on the Korea Exchange since June 1975 under code 005930, is headquartered in Suwon, according to the exchange's company summary. Its robotics effort is anchored in Rainbow Robotics, the company formed in 2011 by researchers from KAIST's Humanoid Robot Research Center that built Korea's first bipedal robot, Hubo, in which Samsung bought a 14.7% stake in 2023 for KRW 86.8 billion. On 31 December 2024 Samsung said it would exercise a call option to raise that stake to 35%, become the largest shareholder and bring Rainbow Robotics in as a subsidiary. At the same time it set up a Future Robotics Office reporting directly to the chief executive to develop future robots including humanoids, led by Rainbow Robotics founding member Oh Jun-ho. Samsung said it would pair its own AI and software with Rainbow Robotics' collaborative robots, mobile manipulators and autonomous mobile robots, use them to automate manufacturing and logistics, and open overseas markets for Rainbow Robotics through its global sales network.
